【外國人難懂的美國辦公室俚語】

上次老波與網友分享一些美國辦公室常聽到的企業口語，今天分享一些一般外國人更難懂的俚語。這些俚語充滿各種畫面、不知道哪來的緣由、還有許多聽起來很像但意思完全不同的陷阱。

▍ 1. Cut to the chase

切入重點。在電影剪接時，導演會跳過無聊的片段，直接剪到汽車高速追逐 (the chase) 的刺激片段。所以當你開會不想跟別人廢話時，你可以說 Let’s cut right to the chase

▍ 2. When push comes to shove

中文可翻作「緊要關頭」，來源應該是橄欖球或是有物理碰撞的運動，形容當「推」變成「撞」的時候，代表事情到了緊要關頭，已經沒有退路。用法類似 「at the end of the day」

例句: We can talk to different vendors and compare options all day, but when push comes to shove, we’ll choose the one that meets our deadline.

▍ 3. Push the envelope

這句話不是叫你去寄信的意思。它指的是說要勇於創新、勇於冒風險，去突破現有的框架。這裡的 envelope 跟信封沒關係，語源是飛行用語 flight envelope，指的是一架飛機在安全操作範圍內可達到的飛行參數極限範圍，通常包括速度、高度、機翼負載比例等變數。

例句: To stay ahead of competitors, our department is pushing the envelope with new operating models and AI-driven solutions

▍ 4. Put pen to paper

有了大膽創新的點子後，必須要採取具體行動。這並不是單純的指把東西用紙筆寫下來，而是叫人開始跨出第一步，把決策變得更正式、更實際。

We’ve already had weeks of discussions, so now it’s time to put pen to paper and finalize the partnership agreement.

▍ 5. Run it up the flagpole

這句話指的是「試試水溫」，把提議交出去，看看公司內部反應。語源是說把旗子升上去，看誰會向它敬禮。 Let’s run this cost-cutting proposal up the flagpole and see what happens.

但切勿與 「raise the flag」混淆，那指的是提醒大家有潛在問題。

▍ 6. Beat a dead horse

這是很有畫面感的一句常用俚語，並不是真的叫人去鞭屍或是虐待動物，通常是形容一個人浪費力氣在講已經結束的事情。譬如說我們常在開會時，會聽到同事持續抱怨大家已經講過的事情。

例句: Let’s not keep talking about who dropped the ball on that project…..we’re just beating a dead horse. Move on now.

▍ 7. Boil the ocean

還有一件事情跟抱怨一樣沒意義，那就是中文說的「徒勞無功」，花太多的資源，想要完成太大但幾乎不可能的目標，像是要把海洋裡的水全都煮沸一樣。

例句: Overhauling the entire organizational design in one go is like boiling the ocean. Let’s just focus on specific functional areas.

▍ 8. Move the needle

跟直覺相反，這並非指的是跟針線一樣細微的事情。這句話指的是看到顯著的影響或成果，通常是要能夠量化的。它的語源並非是縫衣服的針，而是儀表板上面的指針，當看到指針移動時即代表事情有改變。

例句: Implementing this new marketing strategy could really move the needle on our quarterly revenue

另一句很相似的「thread the needle」 意思則是指對於棘手的環境謹慎應對

▍ 9. Put lipsticks on a pig

但如果你是要講這東西不僅沒辦法 move the needle，根本就是來「粉飾太平」，沒有解決真正的問題。如同幫豬公塗口紅，只用非常表面的方式來掩蓋，那就可以用這句，在商業和政治上常見。

例句: Updating the logo on the app without addressing those bugs is just putting lipstick on a pig

▍ 10. Go to town

指的是毫不保留，盡力地、完全放飛自我地去完成某事，通常是正面的意思。原本是形容鄉下人進城，開始奢華地大肆遊玩。所以你可以說: When they got the greenlight for the budget, the design team went to town (或是 went all out) on the new project.

但是要記得，如果是 「go to town on 某人」則是不好的意思，意指你「撿到槍」，開始毫無保留的砲轟。譬如說老波看到某網紅的一些文章，有可能會 go to town on XXXX。同樣意思的俚語你也可以說 I had a field day with XXXX

切記: go to town 不等於 go downtown，後者是口交的意思，我有看過外國人誤用.....
