At the dawn of the 20th century, Albert Schweitzer was hailed as a brilliant intellectual, a philosopher and theologian of rare distinction, and a virtuoso organist admired across Europe. His lectures at the Sorbonne and writings on Bach secured his place among the continent’s cultural elite, while his refined appearances in concert halls and academic salons painted a picture of success and prestige. Yet beneath this polished exterior, Schweitzer felt a profound restlessness—a stirring call that no amount of applause or acclaim could satisfy. That call came unexpectedly, sparked by a small advertisement seeking doctors to aid the suffering people of Gabon, Central Africa, a place devoid of medical care and burdened by hardship. At thirty years old, and at the peak of his celebrated career, Schweitzer shocked those around him by deciding to abandon his comfortable life and train as a doctor, dedicating himself to service in the jungle. Enduring scepticism and ridicule, he remained resolute: “I will go,” he declared simply, “to be of service.” Arriving in Lambaréné during the turmoil of World War I, Schweitzer found nothing but a patch of muddy ground where he began to build a hospital by hand. Sawing wood, tending to wounds, and performing surgeries by the flickering light of oil lamps or natural sunlight, he offered care freely and without expectation. Over the years, his humble mission blossomed into a beacon of hope, drawing patients from across Africa. Schweitzer’s unwavering compassion and commitment earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952—not for political deeds or speeches, but for embodying his profound ideal of “Reverence for life.” He spent his remaining days in Lambaréné, buried alongside those he served, leaving a lasting legacy rooted deeply in empathy, humility, and selfless devotion.

0920 廖振富 早上恰好讀到曹永洋老師寄贈的《八芝蘭天玉齋隨筆》，對曹賜固老先生、與曹永洋老師父子熱愛文學、電影、藝術的家學傳承，以及所散發的人文涵養，深感佩服。
Hanching Chung 周五與曹先生談，才知道有些人覺得父子文筆類似；永洋先生解釋他父親的某些經歷是無法代筆的。最有趣的是老先生推薦Henry James的The Portrait of a Lady，說是戀愛心理曲折的代表作，當初我以為是讀日文本的經驗談。不過，在新潮文庫我問此事，原來是文庫有漢譯本.....
廖振富 《八芝蘭天玉齋隨筆》收錄曹賜固老先生〈走過來時路〉一文，確實特別提到Henry James的The Portrait of a Lady這本書（頁61），他說：「我希望喜歡用囈語、浪漫、虛幻的詞藻歌頌愛情的作家們細讀這部小說」。

翻讀《蘭巴倫的篝火》 (史懷哲之友選集之三)，台北：志文，2006，很有意思：主編曹永洋為我勾選1/3篇，不過有許多驚喜處，譬如說，昨天我的筆記：康國維 1938-1999 契訶夫短篇小說選；臺灣鳥類指南 (合著)，而此書收入其白話"詞"「思鄉思親夢裡總成空」(頁168-73、包含「夢故鄉憶往事」1978/1983、「天上人間難相見」；曹永洋有其簡傳)和譯高爾基的散文詩「海燕之歌」(頁174-76)。

周五與曹永洋先生聚會的一些細節，我補充一下：他也推薦許多書與文章，最出乎我意外的是劉森堯學長的三篇大文：記母親、戀人.... (據說刊在劉森堯著 《天光雲影共徘徊》， 爾雅 出版社，2001)，待查。
