Now We Know Exactly What’s in a Budweiser
Under public pressure, Anheuser-Busch has now listed the ingredients of Budweiser and Bud Light
Anheuser-Busch revealed the ingredients in their Budweiser and Bud Light beers on Thursday, one day after a food blogger started a petition that gathered over 44,000 signatures.
For the first time, the brewer’swebsite lists the ingredients of these two beers: “Water, Barley Malt, Rice, Yeast, Hops.” The company has promised to disclose the ingredients of all their other beer brands—which include Beck’s, Michelob and Stella Artois—in the “coming days.”
Food blogger Vani Hari began the petition on Wednesday, amid suspicions that many mainstream beers contained added ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, stabilizers, artificial colorings, and even fish swim bladders, as she explains on her website. “I grew concerned about the beer after discovering there is a long list of additives the government has approved for use,” she wrote.
Hari has previously launched successful petitions urging Kraft to remove the orange food coloring from its kids’ macaroni & cheese, and Subway to remove an ingredient used in yoga mats from its breads.
Though not required by law to reveal beer ingredients, the company suggested the petition had moved it to act. “As American consumer needs evolve, we want to meet their expectations,” a spokesman said.
