The wise old man (also called senex, sage or sophos) is an archetype as described by Carl Jung, as well as a classic literary figure, and may be seen as a stock character.^[1] The wise old man can be a profound philosopher distinguished for wisdom and sound judgment.

賢者（けんじゃ）は、

1. 一般的に賢い人のこと。賢人（けんじん）。反対は愚者。著名な思想家を指して使われることもある。
2. キリスト教新約聖書に登場する占星術の学者たち。東方の三賢者あるいは東方の三博士。マギ。
3. 中世ヨーロッパの騎士道物語に脇役として頻繁に登場する智慧者、特殊能力者。また、これを下敷にしたファンタジー作品に登場するキャラクターのひとつ。In medieval chivalric romance and modern fantasy literature, he is often presented as a wizard.
