Yu-Min Lai

Multigenerational Playgrounds Bring Health and Socialization to All Ages, Especially the Elderly

Who says kids get to have all the fun? Playing outdoors can and should be for all ages, especially the elderly who need to keep fit and active.
All too often, however, a grandparent will take their grandchild to a playground and sit quietly on the sidelines, never gaining the benefits of physical activity. Shouldn’t there be a space where even the more mature among us can frolic and play, or at the very least burn calories and get their heart rates up?
As luck will have it, “senior playgrounds” are popping up in the U.S. in recent years, and are especially popular in Europe and Asia.
In the U.S., the nonprofit organization KaBOOM! has been working in partnership with the Humana Foundation to build multigenerational playgrounds throughout the country. KaBOOM! has already built 53 multigenerational playgrounds across America in cities such as Cleveland, Tampa and Orlando.”
Multigenerational playgrounds can be equipped with elliptical machines, body flexors, and unusual stationary bikes designed to promote balance, strength, and flexibility. Seniors that might otherwise feel isolated are now meeting new friends while at the same time taking care of their health.
Foreign cities such as Barcelona, which boasts a whopping 300 senior parks, view their investment in multigenerational playgrounds as an investment in the health of their aging population.
According to an article in the Huffington Post,
Analysts estimate that 40 percent to 45 percent of the population in Spain will be retirees by 2050. Spending money on parks to keep that population alert and healthy, the thinking goes, could save a lot in expensive health care costs.”
With 71.4 million people age 65 or older in 2029, the U.S. would be wise to follow in Spain’s footsteps.

All Together「

All Together
AndIfWeAllLivedTogether2011Poster.jpg

All Together[1] (FrenchEt si on vivait tous ensemble?, literally "And If We All Lived Together?"), is a 2011 French-German comedy film written and directed by Stéphane Robelin, and starring Jane Fonda and Geraldine Chaplin as participants of an alternate living experiment, that is observed by a graduate student played by Daniel Brühl. The film marks Fonda's first French-speaking role since starring in Jean-Luc Godard's filmTout Va Bien (1972).[2]
Filming took place over two months in Paris in summer 2010.[3][4] The film premiered on the closing night of the Locarno International Film Festival on 13 August 2011.[5] It was released on DVD on March 19, 2013.[6]

Analysis [edit | edit the code]
This film addresses several social issues. Europe is facing the problem of aging of the population and growth of life expectancy. This film deals with the issue of disease of addiction and death. It addresses the difficulties encountered with age, especially related to Alzheimer's disease. It is also addressed in a lighter way of a taboo: the sexuality of seniors, including the replica of Jane Fonda: "I masturbate a lot."

Through this film, the viewer becomes aware of the difficulties that can bring the age, but it can also become aware that life still exists. Despite the old age-related problems, this group wants to live. Aging is not synonymous to wait for death.

This film is part of a literary and artistic movement which for several years gives a new vision of old age. Parallel you can do with novels like The old who did not celebrate his birthday or even Jonas Jonasson How rob a bank without losing its denture Ingelmann-Catharina Sundberg, or three times the film by Julie Gavras 20 years.

How to plan for a good death

“If the time comes when I can no longer take part in decisions for my own future, I want to receive whatever quantity of drugs can keep me free from pain or distress, even if death is hastened. If there is no reasonable prospect of recovery I do not consent to be kept alive by artificial means. I do not wish to be transferred to hospital and should like to die in my own bed.”

Sheila Kitzinger, the natural childbirth activist who died in April, pioneered the idea of birth plans. Her daughters, Celia and Jenny, describe how their mother made a death plan – so she could die at home according to her...
