Chiaheng Wu──在好土 : home to 。

“Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates.”

On this day in 1884, ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN by Mark Twain was first published in the U.K. The novel was published in the U.S. in February 1885.
“Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”
―from ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (1884)
Along with Blake and Dickens, Mark Twain was one of the nineteenth century’s greatest chroniclers of childhood. These two novels reveal different aspects of his genius: Tom Sawyer is a much-loved story about the sheer pleasure of being a boy; Huckleberry Finn, the book Hemingway said was the source of all the American fiction that followed it, is both a hilarious account of an incorrigible truant and a tremendous parable of innocence in conflict with the fallen adult world.
"There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth" - Mark Twain. He was born #OTD 1835, he was a pilot on the Mississippi (1857–61) and from 1862 worked as a newspaper correspondent, adopting the pseudonym ‘Mark Twain’, familiar to him as the leadsman's call on the Mississippi.

"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a novel by Mark Twain that follows the journey of a young boy named Huck Finn as he escapes from his abusive father and travels down the Mississippi River with Jim, a runaway slave.
Along the way, they encounter various adventures and characters, including the feuding Grangerford and Shepherdson families, the frauds known as the Duke and the King, and Tom Sawyer, Huck's friend who joins them in their escapades.
Through Huck's eyes, the novel explores themes of freedom, racism, morality, and friendship.
Huck grapples with questions of right and wrong, often defying societal norms to follow his own moral compass. Ultimately, Huck and Jim's journey down the river becomes a metaphor for the search for freedom and the complexities of American society.

The New York Saturday Press published Mark Twain's “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog” on this day in 1865.
"It might be a parrot, or it might be a canary, may be, but it an't it's only just a frog."
--from “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" (1865)
These sixty satirical, rollicking, uproarious tales by the greatest yarn-spinner in our literary history are as fresh and vivid as ever more than a century after their author’s death. Mark Twain’s famous novels Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn have long been hailed as major achievements, but the father of American literature also made his mark as a master of the humorous short story. All the tales he wrote over the course of his lengthy career are gathered here, including such immortal classics as “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg,” “The Diary of Adam and Eve,” and “The $30,000 Bequest.” Twain’s inimitable wit, his nimble plotting, and his unerring insight into human nature are on full display in these wonderfully entertaining stories. "Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please."
-- Mark Twain an Interview with Rudyard Kipling (1899)
The first of two hardcover volumes collecting the major nonfiction by the “father of American literature”: more than 150 letters, essays, and speeches selected to showcase the dazzling range of his interests and passions. Whether crossing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans or blazing through Europe and the Americas, Twain turned his trademark wit, candor, and acerbic sarcasm on all his experiences. We can trace his personal evolution through his ambition-filled missives home to Missouri after moving out West to be a fledgling reporter, his raucous stories of navigating a steamboat down the Mississippi, his romantic-turned-elegiac sentiments for his wife, Livy, and, later in life, his darker reflections on the ills of society. Often too outrageous not to be true, Twain’s real-life adventures added to his enduring legend, while his clear-eyed view of humanity has provided an unmatched blend of entertainment and moral integrity for generations of readers. At last the anchor was up, the sails were set, and off we glided. It was a short, cold Christmas; and as the short northern day merged into night, we found ourselves almost broad upon the wintry ocean, whose freezing spray cased us in ice, as in polished armor. The long rows of teeth on the bulwarks glistened in the moonlight; and like the white ivory tusks of some huge elephant, vast curving icicles depended from the bows.

“It’s a horrifying step toward extinction."

Oxford World's Classics

We will be honoring Herman Melville as the #ClassicsInContext Author of the month for August! Herman Melville was born on August 1, 1819 in New York City. Melville is a renowned American novelist, poet, and short story writer, most notably for 'Moby Dick' and 'Bartleby, the Scrivener.' At the start of his life, he and his family lived in luxury, only to plunge into poverty once his father died shortly after the failure of his import business in 1832. The author later embarked on a whaling voyage in the South Seas that inspired his early novels 'Typee' and 'Omoo.'

Herman Melville

Happy 200th Birthday to Herman Melville, born on this day in 1819 in New York, NY.
“Consider the subtleness of the sea; how its most dreaded creatures glide under water, unapparent for the most part, and treacherously hidden beneath the loveliest tints of azure. Consider also the devilish brilliance and beauty of many of its most remorseless tribes, as the dainty embellished shape of many species of sharks. Consider, once more, the universal cannibalism of the sea; all whose creatures prey upon each other, carrying on eternal war since the world began.
Consider all this; and then turn to the green, gentle, and most docile earth; consider them both, the sea and the land; and do you not find a strange analogy to something in yourself? For as this appalling ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy, but encompassed by all the horrors of the half-known life. God keep thee! Push not off from that isle, thou canst never return!”

The Call of the Wild is a novel by Jack London, published in 1903. It is one of London’s most famous works and a classic of American literature. The story is set during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s and explores themes of survival, the call of nature, and the clash between civilization and the wilderness.

The novel follows the journey of Buck, a domesticated dog who is stolen from his comfortable life in California and sold into the harsh conditions of the Yukon as a sled dog. As Buck faces physical challenges, brutal treatment, and the unforgiving wilderness, he begins to rediscover his primal instincts. Over time, he transforms into a leader and ultimately answers the "call of the wild," joining a wolf pack and embracing his true nature.

The novel is notable for its vivid descriptions of the natural world, its exploration of human-animal relationships, and its philosophical underpinnings about life and instinct. It's a gripping adventure that remains popular with readers of all ages.if
